Juwala Singh Lane

Juwala Singh moved to Pukekohe with his wife Karam Kaur Singh, in 1938 and leased a property in Victoria St where they operated a market garden.

By 1953 Juwala Singh became the first Indian to purchase a commercial property in King St.

On March 8 2013 the Franklin Local Board and the Franklin Historical Society hosted commemorative unveiling of the new street sign on Juwala Singh Walkway.

Members of the family of Juwala Singh, stood with pride on the walkway which now bears his name.

Mr Singh passed away in 1976 and those who knew him say the naming of the walkway near where he owned property is a fitting tribute to a man admired and respected by many.

‘‘ I know dad would have been shocked to know a lane has been named after him in the main street of Pukekohe,’’ said daughter Pritam Kaur Singh.
‘‘He was a humble man but a man who believed in the community that he served.’’
